O mito da princesa mortal que transformou-se em deusa e cuja beleza despertou o ciúme de Vênus e o amor de seu filho, Cupido, foi contada pela primeira vez pelo escritor romano Lúcio Apuleio, em “O Asno de Ouro”, século II d.C. Desde então, vem sendo retratado por vários artistas, da antiguidade ao período neoclássico.
